Mass mortality of fishes in the Yahuarcocha lagoon, cantón Ibarra, province Imbabura. February 2003Abstract
During February 2003 in the Yahuarcocha Lagoon a massive death of fish was registered, being considered that approximately 500 fish/m2 died by unknown causes. Event that last during some weeks and then decreased gradually the number of deaths. The National Fisheries Institute performed a monitoring during 19th and 20th of March to determine the possible causes; the environmental and biological parameters, identification of the existing species in the lagoon and the histopathology of the organs and tissue of the affected fish were analyzed. The physico-chemical parameters in the water column and sediments were within the normal ranks for lotics bodies. From the planktonic, ictioplanktonic and ictic point of view, Yahuarcocha lagoon shows low diversity and the abundant species indicated alteration in the quality of the water, that would have its origin in the great amount of existing organic matter in the lagoon. The process of bacteraemia and enteritis in the Xiphophorus helleri specie was associated with the proliferation of bacteria in organs and tissue and the development of epibionts to the quality of water and in the Carassius sp. species to the proliferation of bacteria and development of parasitism by microsporidia that originated the death of these species. The microbiological water analyses registered the presence of pathogenic bacteria such as Aeromonas sobria and Aeromonas hydrophila, agreeing with the histopatologic analyses performed in adult organisms. Concerning to juvenile and fish larvae affectation that indicates pathological alteration was not observed. It is recommended to establish a seasonal pursuit of the hydrographic and ecological situation of the Yahuarcocha lagoon in order to preserve this lacustrine environment and the different activities that are developed in it.
