Terrestrial cyanobacteria at Point Fort William, Greenwich Island, south Shetland, AntarcticaAbstract
During the Third Ecuadorian Antarctic Expedition (1991), the project "Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria at Point Fort William, Greenwich Island, South Shetland" was started. Samples of mosses, lichens, rocks, as well as samples of crusty soil, were collected and studied in search of cyanobacteria. Abundant filamentous cyanobacteria of the family Oscillatiriaceae were detected in the crusty soil and in association with the mosses Polytrichum juniperus Hedw. and Polytrichum sp. Especimens of Nostoc sp. were foundin the cephalodia of the lichen Stereocaulon alpinum Laur.
