Distribution and fisheries of the Black Sea anchovy (preliminary report)Abstract
The Black Sea anchovy is one of the most abundant Black Sea species. Its stock is scarcely used by the fisheries and its exploration is one of the high priority tasks for the fisheries. The Black Sea anchovy fisheries should be increased not only by intensified fishing activities but also by higher efficiency of the coastal catches. In summer the anchovy is distributed within the whole Black Sea, there it has spawning sites and gets fattened. During the autumn-winter period it gets closer to the coasts forming huge aggregations. Its overwintering occurs in the warmest coastal waters, i.e. at the southern coast of the Crimea and along the coasts of Georgia. The Black Sea anchovy fisheries is carried out during its wintering and spring migrations. The overwintering areas of the anchovy are Utrish, Novorossiysk, Gagry Bay, Pitsunda Bay, Sukhumi Bay, Kondor Cape, Rioni "pitch", Batumi, Ayu-Dag and Balaklava. Off Balaklava and Batumi, the fisheries are conducted by purse seiners. The overwintering sites are most prospective for the Black Sea anchovy fisheries: effective catches fall into the periods of November-December, sometimes January, March-April. In January, February and in the early March the anchovy dwells at the depths ranging from 50 to 90 m.
