En el presente capítulo se describen la historia del descubrimiento del cangrejo excavador y estuarino endémico del Atlántico Sudoccidental Neohelice (Chasmagnathus) granulata (Brachyura, Varunidae) y los cambios que ha experimentado su denominación, se discute su posición sistemática y filogenia y se detalla el uso que de él se hace como modelo experimental, especialmente en fisiología y neurobiología. In this chapter the history of the discovery of the Southwest Atlantic burrowing and endemic estuarine crab Neohelice (Chasmagnathus) granulata (Brachyura, Varunidae) and the changes the name underwent are described, its systematic position and phylogeny are discussed and the use of it made as an experimental model, mainly in physiology and neurobiology are detailed.In this chapter the history of the discovery of the Southwest Atlantic burrowing and endemic estuarine crab Neohelice (Chasmagnathus) granulata (Brachyura, Varunidae) and the changes the name underwent are described, its systematic position and phylogeny are discussed and the use of it made as an experimental model, mainly in physiology and neurobiology are detailed.
