  • Growth, mortalities and yield per recruit of the shrimp fish scad Alepes djedaba (Forskal) (F. Carangidae), from Abu Qir Bay, Eastern Alexandria, Egypt

    El-Sayed, H.Kh.A. (2005)
Egyptian Journal of Aquatic Biologgy and Fisheries
Growth and population dynamics parameters of Alepes djedaba as an exotic carangid fish species from Red Sea into the Levant Basin of the Mediterranean Sea, were investigated. Fish samples were obtained from purse-seiners operating during the day time from Jan. to Dec. 2003 in Abu Qir Bay, Eastern Alexandria. The results obtained show that back-calculated lengths (based upon otolith readings) for the first; second and third age groups were 10.38; 15.4 and 19.32 cm TL respectively, the estimated Bertalanffy growth parameters were L∞=33.29 cm, K=0.2473 and t0= -0.51. The Length-weight relationship was represented by the formula: Log W=-1.9245+2.9762 Log L. Total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were 1.85; 0.62 and 1.23 respectively. The exploitation rate (E) was found to be 56%. A Beverton and Holt yield per recruit model indicated that the maximium sustainable yield could 20.20 g at fishing mortality F= 1.6, while the current yield per recruit was 20.10 g at fishing mortality 1.23. The results proved that the purse-seine fishery of A. diedaba is over exploited in Abu-Qir Bay and requires to be managed.
  • Chemical analysis of some macrophytes in Mariut and Edku lakes, Egypt

El-Sarraf, W.M. (Alexandria : The Faculty of Agriculture, Alexandria Univeristy, 1995)
    Alexandria Journal of Agricultural Research
Results of the investigation carried out in Lakes Mariut and Edku revealed that the trace metals concentrations in ceratophyllum demersum is relatively higher than that in Potamogeton pectinatus. The protein and trace metals in macrophytes collected from unpolluted areas is lower thjan that form polluted ones. Eichhornia crassipes can have a restricted role for the treatment of lake water. In Lake Edku, the results of chemical composition of sediments agree with the previous studies. The trace metal content of C. demersum was higher than that of P. pectinatus. The higher organic carbon level was recorded in stems of submerged plants and in leaves of floating ones. On the other hand, the high concentration of trace metal was observed in leaves of submerged plants and the roots of floating plants. The epiphytes on C. demersum showed trace metal content relatively less than that of the substratum.

  • Effects of copper on photosynthesis activity and chlorophyll-a content of chaetoceros radicans schutt

Taha, O.E.; El-Sarraf, W.M. (High Institute of Public Health, 1995)
Bulletin of High Institute of Public Health
Chaetoceros radicans was selected to test the effect of copper concentrations of 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 ppm for 6 days on the photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll-a content under laboratory conditions. The photosynthetic activity decreased with time of exposure and copper concentration. The control photosynthetic activity reached a maximum value at 120 hours and chlorophyll-a at 72 hours. Chaetoceros radicans cultures treated by copper showed a slight decrease in its photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll-a at levels 0.001 and 0.005 ppm, while they rapidly decreased at higher copper concentrations.
  • Biochemical effect of aquatic environmental pollution on the fishermen health

    Saad, A.A.; El-Sekeily, A.M.; Moafy, N.M.; Youssef, A.I. (Medical Research Institute, Alexandria University, 2004)
Journal of The Medical Research Institute
This study is an attempt to describe a human health risk assessment as a function of recreationl activities in relation to environmental pollution of El-Mex bay through studying the Haemoglobin-adducts (Hb-adducts) of three aromatic amines namely benzidine, alpha and beta naphthylamine as biomarker for exposure as well as biochemical effects of these pollutants on fishermen in this area, beside the determination of these substances in the tissues of 2 types of fish at the same area. The sturdy was conducted on 21 control male subjects and 78 volunteers fishermen, all the 99 subjects were chosen to be smokers. Blood glutathione content was significantly decreased in fislrermen compared with controls. On the other hand glutathione-S-transferase, B-glucoronidase, gama-glutamyltransferase and alkaline phosphatase showed significant elevation in their activities in fishermen group compared with tlre control one. The level of the aromatic amine Hb-adducts was also significantly elevated in fishermen group. The presence of a positive correlation between the aromatic amines Hb-adducts and B-glucoronidase activity and negative correlation between the adducts level and blood glutathione content represent a great risk for the health of those fishermen, specially that they are exposed to these pollutants through fishing process and consuming these 2 types of fish in their food that shown to have elevated levels of aromatic amines in their tissues.
  • Seasonal concentrations of some heavy metals in muscle tissues of Siganus rivulatus and Sargus sargus fish from El-mex bay and eastern harbour, Alexandria, Egypt

Khaled, A. (Ain Shams University, 2004)
Egyptian Journal of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries
The concentration of seven heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) were detected seasonally in muscle tissues of two fish species (Siganus rivulatus, Sargus sargus) collected from El-Mex Bay and Eastern Harbour. In both species, levels of the seven metals were significantly higher in summer compared with other seasons. The concentrations of such metals decreased in the order Fe > Zn > Cu > Ni ≥ Pb > Mn > Cd. The metal pollution index (MPI) for the two species fluctuated between 0.9 and 1.8 in El-Mex and Eastern Harbour. Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) demonstrates that the concentration of the metals (Cd, Cu and Pb) in the muscle of Siganus rivulatus and Sargus sargus from El-Mex Bay and Eastern Harbour are much lower than the PTWI values and accordingly there is no risk for the human consumption of these fish species.
  • Heavy metals concentrations in certain tissues of five commercially important fishes from El-Mex Bay, Alexandria, Egypt

Khaled, A. (Cairo: Ain Shams Univeristy, 2004)
Egyptian Journal of Aquatic Biology And Fisheries
The distribution of eight heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb nd Zn) were detected in muscles, gills, livers and bones of five fish species namely, Sargus sargus, Siganus rivulatus, Mugil cephalus, Caranx crysos and Scomberomorus commerson collected from El-Mex Bay, Alexandria during January 2003. Iron and zinc were most abundant in all fish tissues under investigation. Iron, zinc and copper recorded highest concentration levels in liver while cadmium, cromium and lead recorded their highest values in gills and bones. Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) demonstrated that the concentration of metals (Cd, Cu, and Pb) in muscles of the five fishes are lower than the PTWI values, and accordingly there is no risk yet for human consumption of flesh of these fishes.
  • Light microscope study of Oncorhynchus kisutch muscle development.

    Rabah, S. (Alexandria: NIOF, 2005)
    Egyptian Journal of Aquatic Research
Study of microscopic structural changes of red and white muscle of coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, through different developmental stages and through transition from parr to smolt revealed developmental variation in fibre size where white fibres were larger than red ones. The increase in fibre area, characterizing all stages of development, was associated with reduction in both fibre and capillary densities. In large fish the reduction in red muscle capillary density was 10 fold lesser than that of white muscle.
