Trace metal concentrations for Fe, Al, Mn, Cr, Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd, were measured at several stations in the Ngomeni area from Oct-Dec.96. The concentration levels were found to decrease in the order Mangrove Forest 2 (MF2). > Salt Pond (SP) > Mangrove Forest 1 (MF1) > Degraded Mangrove Area (DA) > Aquaculture area (AQ). Station AQ was especially poor in available trace elements. If rehabilitation or restoration activities were to be initiated in the degraded sites and non-operational salt pans, trace metals levels will not be the limiting factor (either in terms of deficiency or toxicity); rather the salinity levels could be.Page Range
