Marine benthic algae which are designated as seaweeds have been utilized more or less systematically by coastal dwellers as food, and many other purposes, in various parts of the world from the ancient times. Despite the vast seaweed resources on the East African coast, historical records on their uses in the region are very scarce. Only members of the genus Eucheuma J. Agardh have been exploited commercially in Tanzania, since the early 1950's. This paper discusses the seaweeds of the Kenya coast, their documentation, and their present and potential uses. A discussion on how to enhance their utilization is also given.Page Range
