Reproductive success of sea turtle 2008-2010 at Playa El Guanal, Isla de la Juventud, CubaAbstract
Se determinó el éxito de los nidos para las tortugas verde (Chelonia mydas) y caguama (Caretta caretta), a partir de monitoreos realizados en playa El Guanal (Sur de la Isla de la Juventud), durante las temporadas reproductivas 2008, 2009 y 2010. Se tomaron como indicadores, Éxito de Emergencia (EE), Neonatos Eclosionados Muertos (NEM), Huevos con Embriones Muertos (HEM) y Huevos Sin Desarrollo Aparente (HSDA). En tortuga caguama, ninguno de los indicadores medidos mostró diferencias significativas en todo el período de estudio, p > 0,05. En cuanto a la tortuga verde los valores medios del EE se mantuvieron entre 71,6 y 88,2 %, disminuyendo significativamente en las temporadas 2009 y 2010 (p < 0,05), mientras el indicador HEM aumentó significativamente en 2009 y 2010 (p < 0,05), no resultando así para los indicadores NEM y HSDA, los cuales no encontraron diferencias significativas en todo el período de estudio, p > 0,05. Se estimó que un total de 61 498 crías de las dos especies lograron llegar al mar, de las cuales 10 452 resultaron ser tortugas caguamas y las restantes 51 046, tortugas verdes.The success of nesting green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), during 2008, 2009 and 2010 breading season in El Guanal beach was determined. The hatching Emergence Success, Dead Hatching in the Nest , Embryonic Death and Eggs Without Development was taken like indicators to compare the breading seasons. In the loggerhead turtle, anything indicator show significant statistical different for all study period, p > 0,05, By the other hand in the green turtle, the Hatching Emergent Success ranged between 71,6 and 88,2 %, decreasing significantly for season 2009 and 2010 (p < 0,05) and the indicator Embryonic Death increased significantly in 2009 and 2010 (p < 0,05), beside, the Dead Hatching in the Nest and Eggs Without development not showers differences significant, p > 0,05 between breading season. For the study period a total of 61498 hatching reached the sea, of which 10 452 (loggerhead) and 51 046 (green) were estimated.
