Resilience as indicator for environmental management of Batabanó Gulf, CubaAbstract
One of the most important features of the socio- ecological systems is called resilience, which is related to the magnitude of the forces or pressures that a system can absorb remaining in a stable state and thus being able to self-organize and improve their ability to learn and adapt. In this paper was analyzed the characteristics of this property in the Gulf of Batabanó, Cuba, as an indicator for the formulation of environmental management in the region. Were selected for their representativeness different variables: salinity, nutrient supply rate and recruitment to the fishery of the spiny lobster (P. argus), the main economic resource of the region. These variables in the late 1980's showed significant fluctuations denoting a substantial change in the regime in different areas of the Gulf. In relation to historical patterns, since the end of that decade salinity increases by about 85% to the present, the rate of supply of nutrients begins a decline of up to 30% in 2010 and decreased by 35% recruitment million lobsters with 1 year old. These marked fluctuations reflect the breakdown of ecological resilience associated with the reduction of about 80% of the volume of fresh water by damming and channeling the rivers in the coastal regions surrounding the Gulf. Because of its importance and relevance in behavior and environmental differentiation the region's resilience should be considered a key indicator in environmental planning.
