The fishery for small pelagic fish during 2008 in EcuadorAbstract
The landings fishery monitoring of small pelagic fishes was carried out during 2008, registering an increase about 11% in relation to 2007. The higher species landings were: chuhueco (Cetengraulis ringens), round herring (Etrumeus teres) and pinchagua (Opisthonema spp) by 96%, 80% and 56% respectively, meanwhile landings of mackerel (Scomber japonicus) decreased by 50 %, and anchovy (Engraulis ringens) by 25%, while landings of botellita (Auxis spp) decreased (23%) due to the non food availability in the area and ocean conditions as well. The fishery landings of anchovy was the second most important in terms of biomass, it means this species has adapted to temperature conditions of our coasts. The species reported as “Others” increased their landing by 32% in relation to 2007 year, registering deep water and commercial specie mainly: picudillo (Decapterus macrosoma),carita (oerstedii Selene), hojita (Chloroscombrus orqueta) Chazo (Peprilus medius), etc., which are intended for the manufacture of fishmeal. A 75% of pinchagua and 87% for mackerel landings were represented by species under the mean size of sexual maturity.
