Distribution and abundance of sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus in six sites of the north region of Isla de la Juventud, Cuba MAbstract
αThis work comprises a study of distribution and abundance of sea cucumber I. badionotus in six sites of the north region of Isla de la Juventud, Cuba, during the years 2006 and 2007. In 2006 they were assessed the months of September and October, and in 2007 they were assessed, January, part of July and August and September. Abundance was determined through belt transects (100 x 2 m) by catching all individuals. Fishery data expressed as catch-per-unit-of-effort (CPUE) were converted to individuals per hectare (ind./ha) to facilitate comparisons with catches in each year. To detect differences between adult average abundances, obtained from CPUE, during both years, it was used the non parametric test “U” from Mann and Whitney ( = 0,05). Although in some Sites the bigger abundances correspond to 2006 and in others to 2007, the statistic test show no significance differences. The bigger average abundances were found in Bajo de la Malanga and Cayo Grande with values of 2 950 ± 437 and 3 600 ± 799 (ind./ha) respectively. The resource did not show exhaustion levels, which prove the effectiveness of the handling measures settled down for their protection in the area. α
