A bifactorial laboratory assay was carried out for 28 days to determine the adequate combination of feeding rate (FR) and protein level in the food (PLF), for the culture of juvenile white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Pérez-Farfante and Kensley, 1997) at low salinity (2psu). Juvenile shrimps exhibited initial mean wet weight of 0.06g and initial mean size of 26mm, and were obtained from a commercial hatchery (“YAGUACAM"; Cienfuegos, Cuba). The PLF and the FR were evaluated by the combination of 4 proportions of protein (20, 25, 30 and 35%) in the commercial food (Api-Camarón®), and three portions: low, half and high, after estimate the 10, 15 and 20% of the biomass, respectively. In total, twelve treatments were proven, replied three times, for a total of 36 experimental units (cages of 0.06m2 ), completely random distributed inside a fiberglass tank of 12 m3 of volume, at a density of 10 shrimps per cage. In order to know the responses of the juvenile shrimps, the following variables were registered: mean final wet weight (g), mean final size (mm), absolute growth rate (AGR), normalized biomass (NB), feed conversion efficiency (FCE), protein conversion efficiency (PCE) and survival. There was not significant interaction (p>0.05) between the factors PLF and FR on growth indicators (final wet weight, mean final size, AGR); although as FR increased the juvenile displayed a significant growth (p<0.05). The combination of the analyzed factors affected the PCE (p< 0.01), that resulted in a better use of the food’s protein for growth by the juvenile shrimps that received the lowest portion, while differences were not observed (p>0.05) for highest portions between the values of PCE. Also, the PCE diminished as the PLF increased, so feeding with the lowest PLF (20%) was good enough under these culture conditions. The better FCE was registered in shrimps fed 10% biomass. However, neither the survival nor the NB were affected between the applied treatments.en
