| Résumé: | La Punta Fort Williams, en la Isla Greenwich, fue el lugar seleccionado por el Programa Antártico Ecuatoriano para la construcción de la Estación Científica "Pedro Vicente Maldonado", proyecto que representa la decisión del Estado Ecuatoriano por incorporar la región Antártica al quehacer científico nacional.
La estación, de tipo modular, está localizada en una plataforma plana y reciente, de terreno suelto a una altitud de 20 metros aproximadamente, constituida de sedimentos consolidados glaciomarinos. El área está protegida de los vientos más fuertes y predominantes que tienen orientación Este. El principal acceso lo constituye la Ensenada Guayaquil, ubicada entre la Punta Orión y el Glacial Quito (INOCAR, 1990).
La Punta Fort Williams y sus alrededores constituyen un sitio adecuado para la investigación en las áreas de Ciencias de la Tierra (Mapeo geológico, geología continental y costera, geología y geofísica marina, geodesia y glaciología); Ciencias de la Vida (Biología Marina y Terrestre), Ciencias del Mar (Oceanografía física, química, biología y geológica); Ciencias de la Atmósfera (Meteorología); permitiendo el desarrollo de proyectos orientados principalmente a la conservación del ecosistema natural biótico y abiótico de la región.
Point Fort Williams, Greenwich Islands, is the elected settlement by Programa Antártico Ecuatoriano for installation of the Antarctic Station Pedro Vicente Maldonado, project that represents the ecuadorian government's decision to incorporate the Antarctic region to the national scientific research.
The modular kind station is situated in a flat surface raised, subactual, 20 meters high, composed of glacio/marine unconsolidated sediments. The area sheltered from dominant and strongest east winds, has the main acces in the Guayaquil Cove between the Orion Point and Quito Glaciar (INOCAR, 1990).
For Williams and neighbourhood constitute adequate local to researchers in Geosciences (Geological mapping, coastal and continental geology, Marine Geology and geophysics, geodesy, glaciology); Biosciences (Marine and terrestrial biology); Atmosphere Sciencies (Meteorology) and logistics; special utilization and manangement of the site and adjancences is recommended, contributing to the conservation of the abiotic and biotic natural ecosystem. |
