Two soil profiles corresponding to Almiralty Bay, King George Island; and Fort Williams Point, Chile Bay, Greenwich Islands; were obtained during the Second Ecuadorian Expedition to the Antarctica, as part of a research project dealing with the evaluation of radionucleides on South Shetland Islands. Samples were processed on Chilean Austral University.
Work performed on samples were: Determination of the concentration of Cs-137 and some outstanding edaphic characteristics. Samples from a profile on Almiralty Bay were characterized by a Cs-137 activity considerably higher to the predicted one for the corresponding latitudinal site. The penetration of Cs-137 is favored by the edaphic properties and by the geomorphology of the area. Samples from the profile on Chile Bay present a relatively minor surface Cs-137 activity. |
