Report of Urotrigon microphthalmum (Elasmobranchii: Urolophidae) from Maranhao (Brasil)´s shallow waters and notes about its biologyAbstract
From October 1997 to April, 1998 seventy-nine specimens of the ray Urotrygon microphthalmum were captured, all of them showing sexual dimorphism. They were processed in order to study their morphometrics, feeding habits, and reproduction. The largest was 300 mm in total length and the smallest one 64.4 mm, weighing 103.4 g and 12.5 g respectively. They fed mainly on crustaceans and ploychaeta; of the stomach contents 94.5 % were shrimp and 5.49% polychaeta. 7.6% of the total had empty stomachs. As far as reproduction, three sexual stages were found: 51% juvenile, 30% adult and 19% pregnant, with an average of three embryos per uterus. Among the male fishes analysed 84.4% were juvenile and 16.6% adults.Desde octubre de 1997 a abril de 1998 setenta y nueve ejemplares de microphthalmum rayos del Urotrygon fueron capturados, todos ellos muestran dimorfismo sexual. Fueron procesados con el fin de estudiar su morfometría, hábitos de alimentación y reproducción. La más grande fue de 300 mm de longitud total y el más pequeño el 64,4 mm, peso de 103,4 gramos y 12,5 g respectivamente. Se alimentan principalmente de crustáceos y ploychaeta, de los contenidos del estómago el 94,5% fueron de camarón y poliquetos 5,49%. Del 7,6% del total, tenían el estómago vacío. En cuanto a la reproducción, tres etapas sexuales se encontraron: el 51% de menores, adultos 30% y 19% embarazadas, con un promedio de tres embriones al útero. Entre los hombres peces analizados 84,4% fueron menores y adultos 16,6%.
