Environmental issues in three coastal ecosystems of Baracoa settlement: impacts and solutionsAbstract
The objective of the present work was to identify and evaluate the negative direct and indirect environmental impacts caused by man's actions in three of the main coastal ecosystems in Baracoa settlement: El Doctor coastal lagoon, Baracoa Beach and Baracoa river estuary. RIAM methodology was used for impact evaluation. A total of 30 impacts were identified and linked to the environmental factor they affect, as well as to the actions that originate them. In each case, measures were proposed for their mitigation or elimination, with the purpose of counteracting or eradicating their causes. The analysis of these results permitted to identify superficial and marine waters as the most impacted factor; and the most impacting action, due to its frequency of occurrence, turned out to be the discharge of liquid and solid wastes into these waters. The evaluation of the impacts allowed concluding that six of them are considered very high, 16 high, five moderate, two low and one very low. The very high and high impacts, regarded as the most important, represent around 73% of the total. Moreover, 18 impacts are permanent, 14 irreversible, and only one is not cumulative/synergic.
