The distribution of ichthyoplankton and zooplankton around the Galapagos Islands, 89°W, 92°30'W and 0°1N, 02°S, was analyzed using information obtained from several oceanographic cruises from 1988 to 2001. Areas of higher abundance of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton have been identified to the north and south of Isabela and around the Fernandina Islands associated with the Cromwell Current and areas of upwelling. Planktonic foraminifera, euphausid larvae, and copepods were predominant in the previously mentioned areas. Areas of active secondary productivity related to the equatorial front were also observed to the south-eastern part of Isabela, to the east of San Cristobal and to the north of Santiago with a mix of Cromwell waters. High percentages (>50%) of Globigerina bulloides (planktonic foraminifera) were related to upwelling areas and high densities of fish eggs and larvae. The southern part of Isabela Island is a place of ichthyoplankton and zooplankton richness during normal conditions and during "El Niño" events (August 1997). Fish larvae of Diogenichthys laternatus, Myctophum nitidulum, Lampanyctus sp and Vinciguerria lucetia were the most predominant species. These biological rich areas are associated with the presence of adult fish, such as tuna, which represents an important resource for Ecuadorians, especially to the western portion of Isabela.
