| Title: | The Ramsar Convention Manual: a Guide to the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971) |
| ASFA Terms: | Wetlands |
| Issue Date: | 2004 |
| Publisher: | Ramsar Convention Secretariat, Gland : Switzerland |
| Abstract: | The 6th meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP6), held in Brisbane, Australia, in 1996, adopted an
innovative Strategic Plan 1997-2002 which became a model for the planning processes of other conventions. Following on
from the success of that plan, COP8, in Valencia, Spain, 2002, concluded three years of consultation and drafting by adopting
the Strategic Plan 2003-2008. Its purpose is not only to continue the thrust of the first plan but also to take account of the
fact that a still broader approach to wetland conservation and sustainable development was needed, notably in relation to
poverty eradication and food and water security, integrated approaches to water management, climate change and its
predicted impacts, increasing globalization of trade and reducing of trade barriers, the increasing role of the private sector,
and the increasing influence of development banks and international development agencies. |
