Social-economical activities in the western area of the Batabanó gulf, southern coast of Pinar del Río are analized. The communities do not have a compression of the environmental on the resource, as well as the fragility of the coastal ecosystems. Between the negative effects over the environmental are the indiscriminate cutting, the pollution, all of them due to the ignorance of the mangove forests benefits. The economic activities are industrialists and agriculturists where the spiny lobster fishery (P. argus) is the most important. A decrease of the level of captures from 1990 to 2003, was observed. This behavior reflects the deteriorate conditions of the environment, which limit the recruitment and affect some nursery areas, as well as the accomplishment of the fishing regulations it also make possible an insufficient close season. The establishment of 4 months from 2002 and possibility of extending it must have a positive effect in the resource, but in the increase of the furtive fishing too. A stricter control and environmental education must be necessary. Average profits were $ 35 230 110 USD/year and average total cost were $4 004 837 USD/year, meaning that this economical activity was the most profitable of the coastal zone. Population density was low and is concentrated in little towns and coastal settlements like Coloma and Cortés.
