The coastline of the Santa Elena Península to the west Capaes is relatively stable, with local retreat in the Bay of Santa Rosa, El Cautivo and Ballenita. The rocky coast of La Puntilla is very stable, due to the presence of a coastal platform at an elevation of 2,5m osl, formed during the previous interglacial stage 5a, or due to the duplication of the present platform for tectonic effect. The occurrence of large blocks in reverse position at the foot of a relatively low sea cliff seems to support the hypothesis of seismic chocks in the area. In La Libertad a sedimentary sequence dated 700-500 BP gives evidence of a high sea level due to climatic conditions, or a tectonic uplift. This study gives evidence that the apparent steady position of the coastline does not result from the weakness of coastal processes, but reflects the coincidence of inherited morphology from previous phenomenon or situation, where eustatism and tectonic can combine and balance.
