| Resumen : | The fatty acid composition of the development stages (fingerling, juvenile and adult) of some pond raised fresh water fishes (Heterobranchus bidorsalis, ‘hybrid’ of H. bidorsalis and C. gariepinus, Chrysichtys nigrodigitatus, Heterotis niloticus and Oreochromis niloticus) were determined by gas liquid chromatography (GLC). Fatty acids abundant in the stages of these fishes are palm tic acid (C16:0), Oleic acid (C18:1) and Linolenic acid (C18:3w3) . Highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) such as C20:4w6, C20:2w3 and C22:4w6 acids were present in small quantity. The common features of freshwater fish is evidently displayed namely the enrichment in linolenic (18:2w6) and / or linolenic (18:3w3) fatty acids. However the presence of high proportions of polyunsaturated C18 fatty acids is more typical of freshwater fish oils than are low levels of C20 and C22 fatty acids. Species differences observed in either accumulation or depletion of these fatty acids are discussed. |
