Preliminary estimation of natural mortality of long-tail hake (Macruronus magellanicus) in southern Patagonian shelf waters (Argentina)Abstract
Long-tail hake, Macruronus magellanicus, is an important species in the Argentinean southern demersal species complex. Significant development of these fisheries since 1987 is indicative of the need to assess the hoki resource and for this purpose knowledge about some of the fundamental population parameters, such as natural mortality rate, is required. Knowledge on the natural mortality rate is an important element for the quantification of the resilience of the stock to fishery exploitatuib. In this study an algorithm for estimating natural mortality of hoki is developed which is based on information on abundance at age obtained from area swept methods and from age composition in the landings. As a result, natural mortality rates for ages 5 to 9 ranged from 0.36 to 0.45. A weighted average natural mortality rate for the stock is 0.38.Journal
