| Résumé: | Previously published data and preliminary indications from research now in progress suggest the possible occurrence in offshore Nigeria of economically viable deposits of placer minerals (including heavy minerals), sand and gravel, phosphorite, glauconite, polymetalic manganese nodules etc. In addition, new stratigraphic evidence indicates the existence of potentially rich petroleum plays associated with a Tertiary canyon system in water depths beyond the limits of present exploitation. Based on the comparative geology of similar occurrences in better explored continental margins and ocean basins elsewhere, the possible origin, abundance and distribution of these resources are adduced. A brief assessment of the technology relevant to their discovery and exploitation is presented and policy options suggested |
