Review of the THALASSINIDEA (CRUSTACEA: DECAPODA) from Chile and Argentina
Thatje, Sven
Thalassinid decapods have received increasing attention in marine ecology due to their deep-burrowing activity and their ecological
importance in benthic communities, i.e. as bioturbators in muddy environments (Pemberton et al. 1976, Stamhuis et al. 1996, Coelho et al. 2000). Due to the increasing world-wide interest in biodiversity, the number of new descriptions of thalassinid species increased significantly during the last few decades (Dworschak 2000). Biodiversity studies performed in the western
Atlantic Ocean showed this region to be one of those with highest thalassinid diversity worldwide (Dworschak 2000, Williams 1993). However, marine biologists still paid little attention to the
thalassinids from the southwestern Atlantic waters off Argentina and the Chilean Pacific coast (Fig. 1). Only eight thalassinid species are so far known to occur along the Chilean and Argentine
coasts (Fig. 2). Recent descriptions of new species from these waters (Guzman & Thatje 2003) and especially from the deeper sublittoral (Thatje 2000, Thatje & Gerdes 2000) indicate that the total species richness of the Thalassinidea from Chile and Argentina still remains to be discovered.
The present work is an attempt tosummarize the extant knowledge on the Thalassinidea from both Chilean and Argentine waters.

especies: Angulogerina angulosa (67,9%) y Globobulimina notovata (13,1%).
A total of 12.343 specimens of the Buliminacea Jones, 1875, super family (Protozoa:
Foraminiferida) were collected in the channels and fjords of the Patagonian Region in the south east
Pacific, Chile (42º - 56º S). They were classifided in four families, six genera and seventeen species.
Sediments samples were taken during three expeditions: Cimar 2 Fiordos, Cimar 3 Fiordos,
Cimar 7 Fiordos, Cimar 8 Fiordos, all of them organized by the Comité Oceanográfico Nacional (CONA)
to the area between 44º and 56º S.
In terms of abundance, the most representative groups were Uvigerinidae and Buliminidae
families with 79,9% and 18,2% respectively, standing out between them Angulogerina angulosa
(67,4%) and Bulimina notovata (13,5%).
Geographical distribution shows that uvigerinids tend to be more abundants in the outer
part of the channels and fjords, were enviroment presents oceanic characteristics, while Buliminidae
are more abundants in the inner parts of the fjords (estuarine water).
A. angulosa and Globobulimina notovata presents the highest distribution in the study
area with 45,2% y 35,7% of frecuency respectively.
With regard to bathimetric distributions, there is no apparent pattern for this. However,
Buliminacea seem to prefer deeper waters, at least under 100 meters.

The objective of this study is to describe and evaluate the development gametophytes and
sporophytes of the M. pyrifera, under laboratory conditions. Fertile sporphylls from native populations
of Tierra del Fuego (53°18´11.4´´S; 70°23´30.5´´W) were submitted to sporelling, obtaining a
homogenous solution of zoospores, which were inoculated on microscope slides. The experiment
was performed in a cultivation chamber at a temperature of 8 ± 2 °C, photoperiod of 12:12 and light
intensity of 40 μEm-2s-1, as a cultivation mean, filtered sea water was used, enriched with Provasoli
Medium, (20 ml lt-1), which was changed once weekly basis. The culture was monitored every three
(3) days, from the zoospores stage to obtain sporophytes. The average daily growth was determined
for the gametophytes and sporophytes, using an integrated microscopic system and software to process
images. The average diameter of the germlings was 17,9μm ± 2,99 with an average growth rate of
9,43 % day-1. The gametofitic (microscopic) stage was developed during a five (5) day cultivation
period. After 15 days development of the first sporophytes began, with an average growth rate of
8,35 % day-1. The average length reached at the end of the study (65 days of cultivation) was 2920μm
± 674,98.
