PEGADO, Antonio J.
The present study analyses the length frequency distribution and total length-weight relationship of Engraulicypris sardella, a Cyprinidae fish endemic to Lake Niassa and the most caught in the lake. Fish were sampled from January to December 2012 through artisanal catches landing at Metangula. Results indicate that the total length (cm) from 1,449 specimens varies from 1.5 to 12.5 cm and the average was 9.26 cm ± 2.47. Engraulicypris sardella exhibited recruitment between August to December. The lengthweight
relationship is expressed as the following equation P(g) = 0.00497*CT(cm)3.12 and suggests the isometric growth in this species. Further studies about length, growth and abundance were recommended

The present study aims, analyze the influence of the tide on the engraulids catches in fishing of beach-seine in Angoche,
northern Mozambique. Data sampling of this fishery in Angoche district from 2004 to 2009 available in the database,
Pescart for that district were used. The catch data (Kg) and catch rates (CPUE) were processed in the database and
organized by type of tide (alive and dead). The proportions (weight) of the species composition and average size of
species caught were compared by tide type tide. T-Test was used to check whether there are differences in CPUE's and
medium sizes depending on the tides of three species, Thryssa vitrirostris, Sillago sihama and Sardinella albella.
Results show that there are significant differences in catch rates (CPUE) between the dead and alive tide (t = - 4.89, p =
0.002). Significant results were also found for the medium sizes of the Sardinella albella between the two tides (t =
1.9142 and p = 0,0409). For the species Thryssa vitrirostris and Sillago sihama, the t-test showed no differences exist
of sizes caught between the dead and alive tide (t = -0,0160 and p = 0,4938) and (t = - 0.6464 and p = 0, 2656),
respectively. It is suggested that future studies of this nature have in consideration the tide level, phases of the moon and
factor day and night. However, the present study can be used for technical advice to fishermen that the alive tide, in

Halare, I. A.
A análise
As variáveis meteorológicas
The temporal distribution of the small pelagic fishes Decapterus russelli (indian scad) and Ambligaster sirm (spotted sardinella) where studied taking into account the landings and catch rates from the artisanal fishing sector (beach-seine fishery) for the period 1999-2006 in Inhambane Bay, southern Mozambique. The association of the monthly occurrence (catch rates) of these species was analysed with several hydrometeorological variables, including those of air temperature, rainfall and wind strength and wind direction.
During the study period fish landings totalled 11,064 t at Inhambane Bay, with 1.628 t (14.7%) of D.russelli and 929 t (8.4%) of A. sirm. The statistical analysis characterises the Inhambane Bay climate in four categories: on the 1st quarter of the year the climate is characterised by high precipitation, as well as high temperatures; on the 2nd quarter it is characterised by southern winds; on the 3rd quarter is characterised by lower precipitation and
temperature with variable winds; on the 4th quarter it is characterised by strong northern and southern winds.
The hydrometeorological variables selected show, through multi-variate analyses 13.4% of the variability in catch rates observed, which indicates that other environmental factors are more important for the variability of catch rates of both species.

Como medidas de mitigação, são propostas várias acções para reduzir a introdução atropogênica de nutrientes na lagoa.; An event of harmful algal bloom took place in Bilene lagoon, Mozambique, with massive fish kills and temporary disruption of touristic activities in 2007. This study was designed to assess the hydrodynamic conditions and trophic status of the lagoon and to understand processes that result in algal blooms.
Monthly data collection for CTD and oxygen concentration at varying water depths was carried out from July of 2010 to August of 2011. Results show that the lagoon has two distinct basins, one located to the south, which is shallow but stretches to a larger area than the northern basin which is deep but smaller in size. Water masses in both basins show a typical vertical stratification, which is almost permanent, has a dynamic superficial stratum, one middle halocline and a stagnant and deeper layer. This stratification is more conspicuous during summer months, associated with higher water surface temperatures. However, water salinity was permanently higher in deeper layers of the lagoon with a decreasing vertical gradient
through winter. Oxygen-deficient water was found in the deep layers of the southern basin (shallower basin) and in the deepest areas of the northern basin, which expanded geographically in summer and
contracted during winter. The occurrence of such oxygen-deficient lacustrine layers indicates that fertilization and eutrophication is occuring in the lake. This scenario may cause events of algal blooms
such as the one observed in 2007. To mitigate such events, several activities were proposed in order to minimize the influx of anthropogenic nutrients in the lagoon.
